The
figures are used in various ways to evoke responses, which derive both
from the postures, and the environments in which they are placed, their
interactions with each other, and also from the potential to use distortions
of scale to assist in the formulation of a response to particular surroundings.
The
figure can be identified with as a means of expression, exploration, or
projected experience. The work has a narrative that is autobiographical,
fictional and historical.
The
idea of the female form as something that can be used to embody diverse
abstract and concrete concepts is well established, in Classical and Judeo
Christian mythology, deriving from traditions which depict the first female
as being a manufactured arte-fact made from the earth.
In
Greek tradition Pandora is created by the gods. She is a beautiful work
of art; the passive recipient of divine or male energy and a result of
her appearance in the world is the mixed evil of monogamous matrimony.
She was not given to men as a prize; she was given as a punishment.
In Christian mythology Eve too was made from clay and is also blamed for
the distress that befalls humanity.
